People often ask me what I love most about living in Fishtown and Northern Liberties.
Sure, the restaurants are incredible. The music scene is one of the best in the city. There’s always something happening. But what keeps me here isn’t just the places, it’s the rhythm of everyday life.
A perfect Saturday doesn’t have to be packed with plans. Around here, it’s the little moments that make these neighborhoods feel like home.
Start the Morning Before the City Wakes Up
One of my favorite weekend traditions is getting up early and taking our dog for a walk before the streets fill up.
If you’ve never walked through Palmer Cemetery just after sunrise, you’re missing one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. As the morning light filters through the historic trees, it casts a golden glow across the old headstones, surrounding row homes, and neighborhood rooftops. It’s peaceful in a way that’s hard to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.
Even though you’re only minutes from Center City, mornings here can feel surprisingly quiet.
It’s one of those moments that reminds you why so many people fall in love with this part of Philadelphia.
Coffee, Bagels, and a Walk Through the Neighborhood
After the walk, it’s time for breakfast.
Sometimes that means grabbing an incredible sandwich from Philly Style Bagels on Columbia Avenue. Other mornings call for a coffee from La Colombe on Frankford Avenue before wandering through the neighborhood without much of a plan.
That’s one of my favorite things about living here.
You don’t need an itinerary.
The best Saturdays often happen simply by walking.
Every few blocks you’ll discover another coffee shop, boutique, mural, local business, or neighbor stopping to say hello. Fishtown has managed to grow while still holding onto the community feel that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
Head Toward the Delaware River
If we’re in the mood for a longer walk, we’ll usually head toward the Delaware River.
Penn Treaty Park has become one of our favorite places, especially with the dog. The path behind Rivers Casino offers beautiful river views, plenty of space to walk, and a chance to slow down for a while.
Sometimes we’ll find a bench in the shade.
Other days we’ll sit in the sunshine and simply watch the neighborhood go by.
You’ll see runners training for their next race, families enjoying a picnic, dogs chasing tennis balls, kids playing soccer or lacrosse, couples walking along the waterfront, and friends catching up after a busy week.
During the warmer months, especially once temperatures climb above 60 degrees, you’ll almost always find a pickup volleyball game going strong throughout the afternoon.
It’s one of those community traditions that perfectly captures the laid-back energy of the neighborhood.
Brunch? You Can’t Go Wrong
By late morning, it’s impossible not to start thinking about brunch.
Thankfully, choosing where to eat is probably the hardest decision you’ll make all day.
Maybe it’s brunch on the patio at Cedar Point Bar & Kitchen.
Maybe it’s the vibrant outdoor atmosphere at LMNO.
Or maybe it’s grabbing a table at Johnny Brenda’s before the afternoon crowds roll in.
One of the best parts about living in Fishtown and Northern Liberties is that you’re surrounded by locally owned restaurants that each have their own personality. No matter what you’re craving, you’re rarely more than a few blocks away from somewhere worth trying.
Spend the Afternoon Exploring
One of my favorite things about weekends here is that there’s never any pressure to rush.
You can browse local shops along Frankford Avenue, stop into neighborhood boutiques, grab another coffee, or simply enjoy walking through streets lined with historic row homes mixed alongside thoughtful new development.
As someone who’s helped buyers throughout Philadelphia for years, this is often the part of the neighborhood that surprises people most.
Yes, Fishtown and Northern Liberties have become two of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods, but they haven’t lost their sense of community.
People still know their neighbors.
Dogs stop to greet each other on the sidewalk.
Families gather in the parks.
Small businesses know their regulars by name.
That’s something you can’t measure in square footage.
End the Day with Great Food and Live Music
As the sun starts to set, the neighborhood comes alive in a different way.
Dinner could mean incredible Israeli cuisine at Laser Wolf, unforgettable Lebanese flavors at Suraya, or one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated dining experiences at Kalaya.
If you’re looking to keep the night going, there are plenty of options.
Catch a live show at Johnny Brenda’s or Franklin Music Hall.
If you’re lucky enough to find your way into Black Squirrel Club, you’re in for a memorable evening.
Or simply unwind with cocktails at Lloyd Whiskey Bar or R&D while catching up with friends.
It’s hard to find another part of Philadelphia where so much is within walking distance.
The Best Part Isn’t a Destination
As much as I love everything these neighborhoods have to offer, here’s the truth…
Most Saturdays, my favorite place is still home.
Spending time with my husband and our dog is usually the highlight of the weekend.
The restaurants, parks, coffee shops, live music, and local businesses are all part of what makes this area special, but what really matters is knowing they’re right outside your door.
That energy keeps the neighborhood vibrant.
It supports local businesses.
It brings people together.
And it creates the kind of community that makes you excited to come home at the end of the day.
That’s why I love living here.
